Longines - Kick-off of the new FIS Alpine Ski World Cup season in Sölden

As the Official Partner and Timekeeper of the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup, the Swiss watch brand #longines is looking forward to the upcoming 2015/2016 season and wishes the best of luck to its both Ambassadors of Elegance, Mikaela Shiffrin and Aksel Lund Svindal. The latter, who is back from injury, was invited by the brand to the FIS Forum to share with the audience his objectives for the new season. The brand also presented a new timekeeping development – a photocell called “Snowgines” – bearing an enhanced measurement of the skier’s speed, intermediate and finish times.

Since its debut in the alpine ski trials of 1933 at Chamonix, #longines has been faced with a number of challenges and has always succeeded in overcoming them to be able to comply with the highest standards of timekeeping for skiers' performances. Each new innovation has allowed alpine skiers to enjoy a level of precision never witnessed before. However, this level of precision was always quickly surpassed given the brand's infinite quest for perfection.

For the 2015/2016 season, the Swiss watch brand is delighted to inaugurate an enhanced timekeeping development, a new photocell called “Snowgines”, bearing an improved measurement of the skier’s speed, intermediate and finish times. This photocell functions within a distance of over 200 meters through the security nets and detects the skier’s speed until 200 km/h in all weather conditions. In addition, this system has an increased robustness to external disturbances.

In the same quest for precision, the Official Watch of the season will be a one hundredth of a second chronograph, the Conquest 1/100th Alpine Skiing, specially created for Alpine skiing professionals as well as fans of this discipline. This model measures time at multiple intermediaries and has an intuitive analogue display that shows the time to one hundredth of a second using a separate hand. All of this is possible thanks to an exclusive movement of the latest generation.

The start of the new ski season is also the opportunity for the brand to wish the best of luck to its Ambassadors of Elegance Mikaela Shiffrin and Aksel Lund Svindal. The latter, who is back from injury, attended the FIS Forum, where he shared with the audience his objectives for the 2015/2016 season. Talking about his motivation to be back on his skis, he said: “I really like what I do, so I had no doubt that I wanted to make it back as soon as possible. Ski racing is a great sport with a lot of great people. I would miss both the action and my friends a lot if I retired now. And for me coming back from injury also represents a challenge. Especially when you are told it cannot be done in less than six months. It is a cool challenge to take on and see if you can prove them wrong.”

Longines supports the champions of tomorrow

Longines renews its support to the champions of tomorrow through the #longines Future Ski Champions race, which will take place for the first time in St-Moritz, in the context of the World Cup Finals. With the support of their respective national federations, the Swiss watch brand will invite for the third edition fourteen male skiers under the age of 16 coming from fourteen countries will compete against each other in a giant slalom. The ultimate goal will be to become the champion and to take home a #longines watch as well as a trophy. The winner’s national skiing federation will also be presented with a cheque aiming at developing projects for young people.

With the same purpose in mind, #longines will be organising once again this year the #longines Rising Ski Stars prize, awarded to the best female skier under the age of 21 and the best male skier under the age of 23 who compete for the FIS Alpine Skiing World Cup.
