Manchester City F.C. vs. FC Barcelona the most exciting UEFA Champions League match of the week, proven by science
- Nissan’s Excitement Index formula, created alongside scientists at Loughborough University, calculates Manchester City F.C. vs. #fcbarcelona as this week’s most exciting #uefachampionsleague fixture
- Atlético Madrid’s last second win against FC Rostov scored second place
- FC Barcelona currently top the #nissan Excitement Index table, with the most ‘excitement’ points so far this season, followed by Real Madrid C.F. and FC Bayern Munich
Following a thrilling week of #uefachampionsleague Group Stage football, #nissan, the official global automotive #sponsor of the competition, has revealed that Manchester City F.C.’s 3-1 victory over #fcbarcelona was the most exciting fixture, according to science.
Nissan’s Excitement Index scientific formula, calculates an excitement score based on match stats including: goal(s) scored, involvement of star player(s), booking(s) and fan attendance.
Atlético Madrid’s last-second 2-1 win against FC Rostov comes in second place, whilst Legia Warsaw’s impressive 3-3 draw against current champions Real Madrid C.F. scores third in the Excitement Index match week table.

(36.6) and FC Bayern Munich (32.2). English sides Manchester City F.C. (23.8) and Arsenal F.C. (22.6) currently sit in fourth and fifth place in the Excitement Index team table.

Last season, in partnership with scientists at Loughborough University, #nissan launched their Excitement Index by conducting live ‘excitement experiments’ on football fans during six #uefachampionsleague matches. Fans were fitted with wearable technology to monitor and gather data, including: heart rate, breathing rate and electro-dermal activity, to examine the physiological effect excitement has on them. This data was then combined with official match statistics from Opta to develop a scientific formula*, now at the heart of the #nissan Excitement Index.
