Angelique Kerber in #australianopen semi-finals for first time
Stuttgart. #angeliquekerber has continued her winning streak at the #australianopen. In #melbourne on Wednesday, the #porsche Team Germany player reached the semi-final of the Grand Slam tournament for the first time after beating the Belarusian Victoria Azarenka 6-3, 7-5.
“I’m so, so happy that I beat her for the first time,” said the 28-year old German after the top class match in the Rod Laver Arena. “I was telling myself, ‘just go for it’. And it worked. Being in the semi-finals here for the first time is an amazing feeling. I can’t describe it in words.”
The second set in particular was a real tennis thriller. After comfortably winning the first, #angeliquekerber, the No. 7 seed, slightly lost concentration. Victoria Azarenka, the former world No. 1 and #australianopen champion in 2012 and 2013, took advantage and raced into a 5-2 lead. However with her back to the wall, the German No. 1 started playing her best tennis against her bogey opponent to whom she had lost all her previous six encounters. Battling hard and digging deep, she fended off a total of five set points. After one hour forty-five minutes, #angeliquekerber, who reached the semi-finals of a Grand Slam tournament for the last time in Wimbledon in 2012, then went on to convert her first match point.
“I just never gave up and kept believing in myself,” said the #porsche Brand Ambassador, the first German in the semi-final of the #australianopen since Anke Huber in 1998. “When I was behind in the second set, I was just telling myself to forget the score and just to go for it and try to play the best. You can beat her today.“
