Press release available only in original language.

Gianmarco Tamberi won gold in high jump at the Portland IAAF World Indoor Championships this weekend while #ivanaspanovic took silver in long jump. Both athletes explain their performances and what it means for the coming months.

Gianmarco Tamberi (Italy), gold medal in high jump with 2.36m

Your gold medal in Portland?
That is amazing, I loved the crowd, the people, that competition! It was really difficult for me to start jumping well because the track is really fast and I couldn’t feel the time of the floor until the end, but once I understood it, boooom! 2.36 m at first, and that gives me the Gold. Amazing!

Your toughest rival?
My biggest rival was myself. I fought with myself because I was jumping really badly at the beginning. I tried to change that with adrenaline and I moved to fighter mode.

What did you learn ahead of Rio 2016?
I think I have a lot to learn from this, but for now I’m not analyzing the #competition. I just enjoy my wonderful medal.

Next key steps in the months before the Olympics?
Just keep working like I’m working now and like I’ve worked this winter. 200% focus, 200% determination! Just one goal – fly over your dreams!

Ivana Spanovic (Serbia) - silver medal in long jump with 7.07m

Your silver medal in Portland?
After Portland we are one step closer to my main goal, Rio. It was a stop and it was a good one!

Your toughest rival?
Brittney Reese, with a reason. She is a five-time World Champion and a strong competitor, calm and focused. With her on the start line, there is a guaranteed fight every time.

What did you learn ahead of Rio 2016?
The track here was one of the best, so fast. I knew I was ready for a personal best. I am more than happy for that because I know that in this moment I am not capable of jumping 7,20m yet. And I know I need to be at the highest level if I want to win.

Next key steps in the months before the Olympics?
The next and last step before Rio will be European Championships in Amsterdam. There will be a few Diamond League Meets in between and the focus is on Rio. That’s the only thing I’m dreaming about!
