American destroys rivals to win slalom again at FIS World Championships.
Mikaela Shiffrin was the first woman down the mountain in St. Moritz on Saturday and she dominated from the start to win her third #fisalpineworldskichampionships slalom gold in a row.
The American sensation was handed bib No.1 for the first run and she charged down the course to set an imposing time of 47.80s.
Thankfully for the home crowd, Switzerland’s Wendy Holdener managed to post an excellent 48.18s to give Shiffrin food for thought ahead of the second run.
Slovakian pair Veronica Velez Zuzulova and Petra Vlhova also got within one second of the American while Frida Hansdotter, Michelle Gisin and Michaela Kirchgasser gave themselves a chance of a medal.
Shiffrin, who had already secured a giant slalom silver medal earlier in the week, is still only 21 years of age and also has a Sochi Games gold from 2014 and three World Cup slalom titles to her name.
The Colorado native had to watch on from the top of the course as Vlhova and Hansdotter produced impressive second runs, only for Zuzulova to ski out early in her second run after she went the wrong side of a gate.
It was left to home darling Holdener to try and post a quick time to make Schiffrin nervous, her assured run putting her just in the lead from Hansdotter.
The American, though, is currently skiing on a level all her own and she gracefully carved her way down to an emphatic victory by 1.64s.
Shiffrin said, “Today was a really good day and I am really happy. I’m not going home quite yet, but I am happy to walk away from here with two medals.
“It (first run) felt solid. There wasn’t anything crazy going on. It was nice to get that under my belt.
“To be honest, sometimes I don’t control the pressure that well. Sometimes I wake up feeling great and ready to go, and sometimes I feel nervous. Today was somewhere in between.”
