Dr. Scott Nicholson reveals inspiration behind first Escape Room Championship.

Hungary’s capital Budapest will host 24 teams this week as they attempt to find their way out of a locked room through challenges, tasks and puzzles in the first Escape Room World Championship.

The 2017 #redbullmindgamers will have to resolve a modern-day Great Escape in the form of Mission: Unlock Enoch.

This particular mystery came about after an Escape Room Game Jam at MIT, whose illustrious alumni include a staggering 27 Nobel Prize winners, with former President Barack Obama also a fan of the craze sweeping the globe.

March 23 and 24 will see the semi-finals take place on a stage designed by visiting professor at MIT, and Professor of Game Design and Development at Wilfrid Laurier University, Dr Scott Nicholson ahead of the final between the two best teams on Saturday March 25.

Nicholson said: “The #redbullmindgamers project started a few years ago at MIT with an Escape Room Game Jam.

“We actually watched some of the movie MindGamers and players created new escape rooms around those concepts.

“That then moved forward to saying ‘what if we could make something like this in the real world’.

“For players who are going into this challenge, they will need to learn about the science that is going on and the viewers will get to learn a little bit about the scientific principles that we have built into the room.”

This year’s elite field has been whittled down to 22 national teams and two wildcard teams from nearly 10,000 players across 75 qualifier events for an #event inspired by sci-fi film “MindGamers” starring Sam Neill.

ParaPark, the world’s original Escape Room, was founded in Budapest by Attila Gyurkovics so what better place to see the world’s best-crowned champions.

But just what is an escape room?

Nicholson explains: “An escape room is a challenge where a team of #people are put into a confined space, they are given an amount of time to work through challenges, to find hidden objects, overcome tasks and puzzles to try and figure out a way out of the room or to finish up the story.

“A lot of #people think escape rooms are a recent invention; the reality is they are actually just coming out of a lot of things we have engaged with for some time.”
