Less is more: Minimal style penthouse in Antwerp

Hans Verstuyft Architects was commissioned to furnish a penthouse at the Antwerp ‘Eilandje’, located in a new residential tower, Weskaai, that is composed by sequences of white concrete terraces and designed by the renowned architect, Sir #davidchipperfield.

The penthouse has, in contrast to the other floors, a free height of 4m80. It gives a magnificent view of the city, the harbour and its surroundings, and has a lot of natural light

. Different rooms were designed by introducing monumental volumes. Each functional area has it’s own atmosphere, and the connection between them creates a fascinating circulation with surprising panoramas.

The main inspiration of the whole project lies in the concepts of sobriety and minimalism. Reducing the excess gives strength and character to a space. In this context, the refined minimal style is combined with traditional elements, for a final result with an essential and austere tone.

For this harmonious effect, the choices of the materials were fundamental. Among which stand out some brass details, washed lime walls, bronze anodised aluminum fixtures and the use of Pietra di Vicenza, coming from the #grassipietre quarries (www.grassipietre.com) and worked by the Vicenza-based company for floors and walls in the Grigio Alpi version, with a slightly brushed finish.

Accurately chosen for this project the Grigio Alpi declination stands out for its light gray color and the high number of fossils. The nuances of the stone evoke an abstract picture, while the color gives the stone a lively but not excessive effect. It is a gray with a neutral and warm tone, not too hard and not too soft, in which this stone it shows itself in its lasting timeless character.

Verstuyft proposes the same stone, as in an elegant and solemn fil rouge that guides the whole project, also for the essential kitchen top and bathroom washbasin. The chosen elements give the environment a unique atmosphere.
