  • All auction proceeds benefit the #youcanplayproject, ensuring equality, respect and safety for all athletes, coaches, staff and fans

Herndon, VA — #volkswagen of America, Inc. and U.S. Soccer teamed up with the You Can Play Project to support, celebrate and raise funds for LGBTQ+ #pridemonth this June. The Pride-themed auction includes Women’s and Men’s National Team player signed game-issued jerseys and #volkswagen training tops, Pride captain’s armbands and Pride corner flags. The auction is open through June 30, 2022, and all proceeds go to the #youcanplayproject.

The #youcanplayproject is an organization dedicated to ensuring equality, respect and safety for all athletes, coaches and fans no matter their sexual orientation, gender identity or expression. You Can Play partners with sports leagues and other organizations to evolve locker room and spectator culture, consult on inclusion policies, build stronger fan engagement and increase participation in sports among LGBTQ+ youth. In addition to supporting the organization with auction items, #volkswagen is donating $5,000 to the #youcanplayproject.

“With You Can Play hitting our 10-year anniversary this year, we are deeply grateful that a company like VW has raised their hand to support our work and invigorate our push to our mission,” said #glennwitman, Co-Founder, #youcanplayproject. “U.S. Soccer and VW both understand how vital inclusion in #sport is to our community, especially young athletes struggling with their sexuality or gender identity. This #partnership will amplify our message to a new generation of coaches, athletes, families and fans.”

The Men’s and Women’s National Teams are wearing special Pride jerseys with rainbow-colored numbers during their friendly matches this month. The matches will also feature rainbow-colored corner flags, rainbow-colored captain’s armbands and signage around each venue.

The training tops provided by #volkswagen on auction are signed by U.S. Soccer players Christian Pulisic and #walkerzimmerman, as well as Fiona Kida, a Tanzanian-American musician, writer, director and producer who will perform the national anthem at the USWNT match on June 28.

“Pride month to me is all about acceptance, it's about celebrating and being inclusive,” said U.S. Men’s National Soccer player #walkerzimmerman. “Volkswagen is such a big supporter of the LGBTQ+ community. Representing VW and partnering with the #youcanplayproject is a great example of how we want to make a difference on and off the field.”

The USMNT wore the rainbow numbers vs. Morocco on June 1 at TQL Stadium in Cincinnati and vs. Uruguay, presented by Allstate, on June 5 at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City, Kan.

The USWNT are wearing the special jerseys during their friendlies against Colombia, presented by Allstate, on June 25 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colo. (7:30 p.m. ET; FS1 & Vix) and on June 28 at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah (10 p.m. ET; ESPN).

Zimmerman and #youcanplayproject Co-Founder #glennwitman recently shared their thoughts on #pridemonth and the importance of diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging (DEIB) in a #volkswagen video that can be viewed here https://youtu.be/KIQ35OfSstE.
