BOA VISTA ULTRA TRAIL 2023: JAILSON OLIVEIRA SEALS THE TWENTIETH EDITION WITH A NEW RECORD

The twentieth edition of Boa Vista Ultra Trail took place after three years of postponements due to the well-known health emergencies. The island of Cape Verde revived the three running distances in an edition marked by challenging weather conditions. Despite the high humidity, Jailson Oliveira set a new record in the 150-kilometer race, breaking the previous record held since 2007. Additionally, fellow countryman Ariano Dos Santos also established a new record in the 75-kilometer race.

As per the twenty-year tradition, the trail running season and long-distance challenges culminate with the Boa Vista Ultra Trail. This past weekend, despite challenging atmospheric conditions, elite athletes managed to deliver an extraordinary performance, showcasing their resilience.

The 20th edition will indeed be remembered in history, especially thanks to the new records set by the winners. In the Boa Vista Ultra Marathon spanning 150 kilometers, the flagship race around the Cape Verde Island, Jailson Manuel Oliveira Duarte showcased absolute dominance. A Cape Verdean athlete who narrowly missed the record in the 2019 edition by just five minutes, he stopped the clock at 17:13’10”, surpassing the previous record (18:08’09”) set by Spain's Salvador Calvo Redondo, the winner of the 2007 edition, by 55 minutes. Second place went to fellow Cape Verdean Jose Daniel Vaz Cabral, finishing in 20:35’50” followed by Italian Fabio Caporali, who completed the race in 30:21’59”. The sole female participant, Lucibelle Brito Duarte, finished in 33:48’34”.

A new record was also set in the 75-kilometer distance of the Boa Vista Salt Marathon, featuring an all-Cape Verdean podium. Ariano Dos Santos finished in 7:06’59”, breaking the record previously held by Italian Ivan Zufferli (7:39’25”) since 2017. Second place went to Ramilson Correia Semedo in 7:46’59”, followed by Joao Fonseca Lopes with a time of 10:22’00”. The women's race was fiercely contested, with Marina Di Biase leading in 12:09’59”, ahead of Giuseppina Bisignano with a 20-minute gap. Completing the all-Italian podium was Cinzia Bassetto in 13:30’22”.

Finally, the podium for the Boa Vista Eco Marathon covering 42 kilometers, where athletes ran the initial 30 kilometers of the previous races before returning to Sal (the starting and finishing point of the Ultra Marathon). Once again, a Cape Verdean athlete emerged victorious, with Jardel Junior Dos Santos Fortes finishing in 3:50’30”, followed by Luis Carlos Ribeiro Rodrigues in 4:14’09". Antonio Cabral Gomes secured third place, finishing over an hour behind the winner. Among the women, Swiss runner Susanna Kaeppeli claimed victory with a time of 4:25’59”, securing the third overall time and surpassing the competition from local runner Maria Sabado Furtado Varela.

Nature, as expected, played a dominant role not only in the race but also on the small island, forcing athletes to run under challenging conditions. The course was characterized by high humidity, making the sand extremely loose and soft and the race even more demanding. A total of 54 participants, including 11 women, from 7 nations, including Germany, Austria, France, Poland, and Switzerland, took part in the race.
